Photoelectric smoke alarm uses a light bean to help detect the presence of smoke.  According to NFPA, these alarm types are more effective at sounding when a fire originates from a smoldering source, like a lit cigarette that falls into a couch cushion. Photoelectric smoke alarms respond well to slow smoldering fires. A smoldering fire generates large amounts of thick black smoke with little heat and may smolder for hours before bursting into flames.
